Managing Parkinson's Disease Fatigue
Although few studies have focused on fatigue as a symptom of Parkinson's disease,
scientists estimate that it affects nearly 50% of people with Parkinson's. This
feeling of extreme tiredness tends to develop in the early stages of Parkinson's
disease and can happen whether movement symptoms are mild or severe. Exhaustion
of this caliber can cause people to avoid certain social activities, decrease hours
at work, or even retire earlier than planned.
Due to lack of study at this time, no specific mechanism has been shown to cause
fatigue in Parkinson's disease although some doctors suggest it could be the
cause of changes in the brain. Others suggest their symptoms of the disease such
as sleep disturbances that attribute to fatigue. Even stress can increase one's
likelihood of fatigue.
Fatigue with Parkinson's can be very unpredictable making any management difficult.
No therapy has been proven to counter act fatigue. But there are some treatments
that make sleeping more soundly during the night easier that may help people with
Parkinson's disease feel more energetic throughout the day. Another approach
is to practice relaxation techniques and deep breathing throughout the day to give
your body opportunities to recharge and rejuvenate. You may also speak to your doctor
about any medication you are taking that may contribute to fatigue.
If you find you must make life changes to help you manage the fatigue, stay positive
and always look for new opportunities when the changes occur. If you must retire
early, take advantage of spending more time with friends and family. By staying
positive, you will not add to your stress and further increase symptoms of fatigue.
