Wandering is a problem associated with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. It generally occurs when a person suffering from the disease feels lost and disoriented, even if in their own home or another familiar location. Their attentive caregiver may step away for a brief moment and, upon their return, find their loved one gone. Fortunately, there are a number of GPS tracking devices currently on the market that can help keep your loved one safe.

Project Lifesaver.

Aptly named, their mission is to “provide timely response to save lives and reduce potential injury for adults and children who wander due to Alzheimer’s, autism and other related conditions or disorders.” This GPS device is worn around the ankle or wrist. When a loved one goes missing, the caregiver calls Project Lifesaver and a trained emergency response team conducts a search. Average recovery time is 30 minutes—95 percent less time than standard operations.

GPS Shoe & Smart Sole.

These similar devices contain GPS tracking devices in either the heal of a pre-made shoe or in a sole that fits into one of your parent’s shoes. The Smart Sole allows caregivers to set up a radius for their loved one. If they leave this designated area, the caregiver will be notified.

Revolutionary Tracker.

This tracking device can locate multiple seniors at one time, sending information directly to the caregiver’s smart phone or computer. It is also equipped with an SOS button that your parent can push in emergencies.

Bluewater Security.

One of the concerns with GPS tracking devices is that the person suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia will forget to put the device on. For those seniors that always wear a watch, this may be the perfect match. A receiver is set up in your loved one’s home so that an alarm will sound if they go beyond a set distance.

Senior Care Provider.

The advent of these devices has certainly eased the concerns for families that have a member suffering from this disease. There is, however, nothing that can truly take the place of a person’s watchful eyes and awareness. Consider obtaining the services of a senior care provider who has cared for countless seniors facing this disease. They understand their unique needs and requirements and you, the caregiver, will be able to take the time needed to rejuvenate, ensuring that you lead a balanced and healthy life as you continue to care for your loved one.
