Avoiding Identity Theft

Senior Care in Fair Oaks CA

With all the cyber activity in the world today, it seems as though becoming a victim of identity theft is almost to be expected. But fortunately, that is not truly the case. When your seniors were Senior-Care-Fair-Oaks-CAgrowing up, if they were going to be robbed, it was by someone who they could see and they knew it was happening. The idea that they could be being robbed and someone else could be out in the world claiming to be them can be terrifying to them and is one of the reasons some seniors balk at anything related to technology.

But when seniors are aging, and require home care, using technology allows them to broaden their world beyond the confines of their home. They just need to be taught to do it safely.

Have seniors keep a record of their passwords in a notebook or journal that is kept hidden but near the area where they are most likely to use their computer. And have them change their passwords at least once a year. And not use the same password for everything.

If they do any online banking or bill paying, encourage them to keep an eye on their account activity. Regular oversight is one of the best ways to prevent fraud or catch it quickly. The same is true for their credit cards. If they are reluctant to start online banking remind them that the other option is to wait until the monthly statement comes out, at which point it may be almost 30 days into a fraud situation.

What goes hand in hand with online banking and financial activity is the best most up to date virus protection software. Having unique and independent passwords is only useful if no one else can log in and see what they are typing. So get recommendations for a virus tracker and use it regularly.

Have them add their phone number to the National Do Not Call registry (both their cellphone and their home lines) to hopefully avoid some of the scam calls. But have a serious talk with them about never giving their information out over the phone. Many seniors are essentially trusting and if someone calls them and tells them their great-grandchild is in trouble, they will jump into action unless they’ve been taught to investigate first. A great excuse is for them to tell the caller that they no longer have access to their accounts and ask for a return phone number. If it’s a real emergency they will get it.
