For a while, scheduling help for an aging parent may seem fairly straightforward. Someone comes in during the morning to help them get ready, or a caregiver visits for several hours in the afternoon. But aging does not always follow a schedule. Your parent may need very little assistance one day and considerably more the next. When important needs begin occurring outside scheduled caregiving hours, 24-hour home care may be worth considering.
The question is not simply whether your parent needs “a lot” of help. It is whether the timing of that help has become too unpredictable for shorter visits to reliably meet their needs.
Pay Attention to What Happens Between Visits
Scheduled care can work well when a senior’s needs are relatively predictable. The challenge comes when the family starts arranging the entire day around gaps in coverage.
Perhaps your father usually manages well after dinner but occasionally needs help getting to the bathroom. Your mother may normally sleep through the night but sometimes wake confused and need reassurance. A parent recovering from an illness may suddenly need assistance getting out of a chair even though they managed independently that morning.
Look for patterns such as:
- Frequent calls to family outside scheduled care hours
- Difficulty getting to the bathroom or moving around without help
- Meals being missed when no one is present
- Increased confusion at certain times of day
- Family members repeatedly rushing over unexpectedly
- Personal care needs occurring at inconsistent times
One isolated incident does not necessarily mean your parent needs 24-hour home care. A growing pattern is more significant.
Stop Trying to Make Their Needs Fit the Schedule
Families sometimes respond by adding another hour here and another visit there. That can work for a while. Eventually, however, you may realize you are trying to predict something that simply is not predictable anymore.
Ask yourself what would happen if your parent needed help two hours after the caregiver left. Could they safely wait? Could they handle the situation themselves? Is there another person who could realistically respond?
If the answer regularly depends on a family member dropping everything and rushing over, the current care arrangement may no longer match your parent’s needs.
Unpredictability Can Be Hard on the Entire Family
During long periods without assistance, family members may stay mentally “on call” even when they aren’t physically caregiving.
You might hesitate to silence your phone during a meeting. A sibling may avoid making evening plans. Someone may call Mom repeatedly just to make sure she is okay. Families can gradually build their own lives around the possibility that something might happen.
This is one reason 24-hour home care can help even when a senior doesn’t need hands-on assistance every minute. The benefit is having support available day and night when needed.
Consider the Whole Day, Not Just the Hardest Hours
Before changing your parent’s care arrangement, keep track of what actually happens over several days. This can make the decision less emotional and more practical.
Consider:
- When does your parent need hands-on assistance?
- Which tasks can still be completed independently?
- Are certain times consistently more difficult?
- How often are family members filling unexpected gaps?
- What happens overnight?
- Could your parent safely manage an unplanned need alone?
You may find that a different schedule is enough. Or you may find that there are simply too many periods when your parent could need assistance without anyone available.
Care Can Change as Your Parent Changes
Needing more support doesn’t erase everything your parent can still do. A senior receiving continuous assistance may still choose what to wear, enjoy favorite activities, participate in meals, make decisions, and follow familiar routines.
24-hour home care isn’t meant to make every moment about caregiving. It is to provide assistance throughout the day when needs can no longer be confined to convenient hours.
If you find yourself constantly asking, “But what happens when no one is there?” it may be time to look at your parent’s entire day rather than trying to squeeze changing needs into a schedule that no longer fits.
