A recent U.S Geological Survey map that was released showed just how much of the United States was susceptible to earthquakes. While California still reigns supreme as being the most risky environment for people living near fault lines, much the east, the east coast, south, and northwest are also at risk of having temblors. If your loved one lives in a part of the country that could experience an earthquake, they should have a plan, whether they rely on elder care services or not.
It may seem odd for people outside of California to really think much about earthquakes. The last major earthquake to strike the U.S. and not be located in California, and that cause significant damage, was the beginning of the 20th century. That doesn’t mean that it won’t happen again.
The earth’s crust is constantly moving and shifting. The continental plates move against one another and when enough friction builds, an earthquake is possible. Most of the east and northeast portion of the U.S. sits on granite slabs, so an earthquake in Maryland can be felt all the way up into New England. A significant temblor could cause damage to plumbing, water pipes, gas lines, and much more.
For those who require home care for the elderly, the closer that they are to a higher risk part of the country, the more important it will be to have a good plan in place.
Be able to be without power for at least one week. Depending on the destructive force of the quake, it could be much longer than that. If the senior has resources to buy one, they should consider getting a generator. If they do, they should also have a reserve of gas on hand, but stored in an outdoor shed (never inside).
You should make sure that there are blankets and other basic provisions on hand. Keep a couple of sets in the house, including one close to a main entry door.
Have extra bottled water on hand in the event that the home’s well or the city line is decimated. Also stock up on canned foods that have a long shelf life.
While you may not think that you’re ever going to need to be prepared for a major earthquake, the truth is that it can happen at any time and, as a result, elder care preparedness can include these provisions.
