Six Ways for Family Caregivers to Create Joyful Moments

Elder Care Sacramento, CA: Creating Joyful Moments

You’re at your parents’ house and are ready to help out. Your parents are having a rough day. Rather than argue or become frustrated, find ways to create joyful moments. Here are six ideas to get you started.

Spend Time Coloring

Elder Care Sacramento, CA: Creating Joyful Moments

Print out a coloring page designed for teens or adults or pull out a coloring book. Take half an hour to color a picture. As you’re focused on coloring in the lines and choosing the right colors, it helps you relax and enjoy yourself.

Stop and Play With the Family Pet

When you’re frustrated, grab a ball or toy and play fetch with your parents’ dog. If they have a cat, get a string or piece of yarn and have the cat chase it. The antics of a pet can be uplifting.

You could also sit down and let the pet sit next to you. Stroke the pet’s fur while you focus on your breathing. Deep breathing reduces stress and helps you find the balance you need to complete the other chores on your list.

Fill the House With Color

Add colorful touches in rooms you frequent. If you spend a lot of time in the living room helping your mom do a puzzle, a vase of colorful flowers can brighten the mood.

Use throws and pillows to add a burst of color in a family room. A dining room is easily brightened with a potted flowering plant, dishes in cheerful colors like yellow and orange, and colorful seat cushions.

Play Music

Put on some music and dance while you do chores. If you like to sing and find it eases stress, sing along. While you mop floors, mop to the beat of dance music. If you’re busy dusting, put on your favorite band or artist and work to the rhythm.

Fill a Room With a Relaxing Scent

Use an oil diffuser, wax melts, or scented plug-in to fill frequented rooms with scents that help de-stress. Lavender, chamomile, lemon, and orange are all scents that help soothe.

If you don’t like scented room fresheners, make a loaf of bread. The smell of freshly baked bread can fill a home and make it feel relaxed and comforting. Do the same with muffins, quick bread, cookies, and cupcakes.

Take Breaks When Needed

Arrange to have elder care aides help out so that you’re able to take breaks. Spend time with your other family members. Take your kids to the museum, join your spouse for a quiet dinner, or visit with your siblings.

Elder care aides provide companionship and help around the home. Your parents have all of the assistance they need as they age at home, and you get to do things you find enjoyable, which eases stress. Call to learn more.
